The Souvenir Kids
Three sisters. Three childhoods marked by the same label. Three lives shaped by the same painful cycle. Branded as anak oleh-oleh or the souvenir kids—children born to Indonesian migrant workers and foreign fathers—Fatma, Aminah, and Esti grew up carrying a stigma that led them from poverty to child marriage, violence, and exploitation.
Their stories are not isolated tragedies, but part of a much larger reality in Lombok, where thousands of children carry the same label and many face similar hardships.
For families already living on the margins, discrimination compounds economic hardship, restricting access to education, healthcare, and decent work.
Many eventually follow their mothers' path by leaving Indonesia as migrant workers, only to risk repeating the same cycle with the next generation.
Despite years of advocacy and gradual policy improvements, social stigma continues to shape their opportunities long after childhood.
Through the lives of three sisters, this story exposes how migration, poverty, and prejudice can become an inherited burden—and how breaking free from that cycle remains one of the greatest challenges they face.
