A Double Minority Quandary
"Why are you wearing a hijab to a Chinese temple?" a stranger shouted at a Chinese-Indonesian Muslim woman as she left a Lunar New Year celebration with her family.
The encounter captures the reality of Indonesia's "double minority"—Chinese Muslims who often find themselves caught between preserving their cultural heritage and remaining faithful to their religious convictions.
Through interviews with converts, religious leaders, scholars, and members of the Chinese-Indonesian community, I explored how every choice carries consequences.
Celebrating Lunar New Year can invite criticism from fellow Muslims, while abandoning it can strain family relationships and reinforce misconceptions about Islam among non-Muslim relatives.
Set against Indonesia's history of anti-Chinese discrimination and the long-running debate over whether Lunar New Year is a cultural tradition or a religious observance, the story reveals how questions of faith, identity, and belonging continue to shape deeply personal decisions with no single "right" answer.
